National Pet Day

April 11th is National Pet Day celebrating the joy that pets bring into our lives and encourages people to visit their local shelters and bring home one of the greatest gifts to you and your family. Pets are wonderful companions and can make each day a little better. If you’re at the office on this holiday, give your pet a special gift of a walk or playtime with a Love Pet Care Professional Pet Care Provider.

If you’re already a pet owner, hopefully, you let your pets know every day how much they mean to you. On National Pet Day, give them an extra hug or two. Take some new pictures, buy a new toy or reward them with a special treat.

History of National Pet Day

National Pet Day began in 2006 when Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Page wanted to bring to light all of the animals needing homes in shelters across the country. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million animals enter animal shelters every year.  Encouraging adoption rather than purchasing a pet from a breeder or pet store, was one of the main ideas behind National Pet Day.

How to Celebrate National Pet Day

Celebrate National Pet Day by adopting a pet from a shelter or a rescue organization. You will be rewarded with love and save a life at the same time.

You can also volunteer at a shelter and help take care of the animals and offer them your love. Donate blankets, food, or toys if you can’t afford an animal or don’t have the necessary time.

You could create a fun social media account for your pet. So many Instagram pet accounts have gone viral.  Maybe your lovable pet can become famous!

However, you choose to celebrate the day, remember that there are many health benefits of owning a pet. Regular walking or playing with your pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pets can help with loneliness and depression by giving us companionship and a new focus. Most households in the United States have at least one pet.

So that you know you would not be alone, here are some interesting statistics according to the 2021-2022 APPA National Pet Owners Survey:

  • 90.5 million or 70% of American households own at least one kind of pet.
  • 69.0 million own dogs.
  • 45.3 million own cats.
  • 11.8 million own freshwater fish.
  •   9.9 million own birds.
  •   6.2 million own another type of small animal as a pet
  •   5.7 million own reptiles.
  •   3.5 million own horses.
  •   2.9 million own saltwater fish
