People Foods for Dogs

As a dog lover, I’m sure you know that allowing your pup “too much of a good thing” can make your dog sick and/or overweight. There are some human foods that you can add to your dog’s meals in moderation to give them a nutritional boost diet and add some variety to their food. Anything you add to your dog’s meals shouldn’t be more than 25 percent of their weekly caloric requirement.

1. Yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium. Try to pick one with live active bacteria, which can act as a probiotic with no sugars or artificial sweeteners.

2. Salmon is a fatty fish that is also a good source of omega- 3 fatty acids, which aid the immune system. They can also be beneficial for skin and the coat. If you feed fresh salmon, make sure it’s cooked before serving because raw salmon can make your dog ill.

3. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber and beta carotene. Dogs need fiber in their diet. Keeping the digestive tract moving helps the gut healthy. Do not use the canned pumpkin pie mix, which contains many other ingredients. Stick to plain canned pumpkin or cook your own.

4. Sweet potatoes are another source of dietary fiber and beta carotene. They also contain vitamin B6, vitamin C, and manganese. If your pup’s belly isn’t feeling well, you can mash up some sweet potato and give it to your dog with some boiled chicken.

5. Green beans are a good source of plant fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, and manganese. If your pup needs to lose a few pounds, replacing some of their everyday food with green beans is a great low-calorie way to fill them up. You can serve them fresh, frozen, or cooked.

6. Eggs are a good source of protein, selenium and riboflavin. For dogs that have sensitive bellies, eggs are an easy protein to digest. Make sure to use cooked whole eggs.

7. Apples are a great crunchy treat for your dog. They are a source of vitamins A, C and fiber. Make sure to remove all apple seeds, as they contain cyanide. The best way to give your pup apples is to slice them into smaller pieces and make sure no seeds are present.
