Cats have lived alongside humans for almost as long as dogs and continue to be wonderful additions to our lives. Happy Cat Month celebrates our kitties and reminds us of what we should be doing to make sure we have the happiest kitties possible!
HISTORY OF HAPPY CAT MONTH
The CATalyst Council started Happy Cat Month to make people aware of the health and welfare of cats. There are those who think that cats don’t need the same kind of love and care as dogs. The truth is that cats are very social creatures and need the same attention we give to our dogs.
HOW CAN YOU CELEBRATE HAPPY CAT MONTH?
Schedule a trip to the veterinarian. A healthy cat is a happy cat. Visit your vet for a check-up and make sure your cat’s vaccinations are up to date. Remember to ask your vet about preventative medications for fleas, ticks, mites, or heartworm. Even if your cat is strictly indoors, these creatures could manage to enter your home. With preventative care, you are helping to keep your kitty happy and healthy.
Spend time with your cat. As aloof as they may sometimes appear, cats love human attention. Cats are very bright and can be trained to do some tricks. You can teach your cat to shake, sit on command or jump on stools instead of counters. You and your fur baby will enjoy your time together.
Keep your cat entertained. One of the easiest ways to make your cat happy is with a new toy. Some cats go crazy for catnip, so buy your kitty some new toys that come filled with catnip. Experiment with different kinds of toys to see which ones are the best for your feline friend.
Buy high-quality food for your cat if possible. Cats must eat food rich in protein. Make sure that your cat food lists meat as its primary ingredient. If you decide on dry food, you may want to add some wet food to their diet. You can start by purchasing some canned food as a treat.
Adopt another cat. Because cats are social creatures, so you may want to consider visiting your local shelter and adopting a new friend for your kitty. Having a playmate can improve their quality of life. There are so many adorable cats in shelters all over the country waiting for someone to give them forever homes.
YOUR KEY TO HAPPINESS
Studies show that having a cat provides mental and physical benefits for your health, thereby increasing your happiness. Make sure you celebrate Happy Cat Month with your special kitty in September and every month of the year!
